“What Makes Us Human?” — The Distinction Between AI And Humanity In ‘The Amazing Digital Circus’ (2023-2026)

The Amazing Digital Circus is an animated web series released on YouTube by Glitch Productions and created by Gooseworx. The pilot was released in 2023 and, as of 2026, has amassed over 432 million views on YouTube.1 These record-breaking numbers have brought indie animation further into the mainstream and shown how much of an audience there is for entirely human-made stories that vow to never use AI in their production.2

The plot follows “Pomni,” a human who finds herself transported into a virtual reality circus where she can’t remember her real name, but does have memories of her previous life. Pomni meets a group of other humans, some of whom have been trapped in the circus for years and have given up hope of ever leaving.

The six humans of the circus are watched over by Caine, an artificial intelligence (AI) entity who acts as ringmaster. Caine is the antithesis of the humans of the circus. He exists for the sole purpose of entertaining the humans — but mostly to keep them from losing themselves, or “abstracting”.

Abstracting is equivalent to dying in the circus. It is the total breakdown of the psyche; when one loses hope, succumbing to their darkest thoughts, their body becomes a manifestation of despair. Caine is never at risk of abstracting like the humans are because he doesn’t feel emotions the way the humans do. That is why clinging to community and love — deeply human feelings — is what saves humans most from abstracting.

The creation of The Amazing Digital Circus is a communal labor of love. The amount of detail, meaning, and symbolism in the short episodes can only be created by human ingenuity. The Amazing Digital Circus resonates so strongly because it centers human creativity both in its production and in its storytelling, using AI characters as a contrast to highlight what makes humanity meaningful.

The Rise Of AI In Animation

The animation industry is at a turning point for better or for worse — depending on who you ask — with the rise of generative AI. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates “original content” such as images, text, or video.3 However, that description is misleading because AI is not entirely able to produce “original” content. AI learns from data, meaning detecting patterns and replicating them. Therefore, the technology is only able to give the illusion of originality.

With this issue becomes the concern that specific styles are being directly copied: such as the distinctive animation style of Studio Ghibli or the signature writing style of Shakespeare.4

An AI image shows the popular 'distracted boyfriend' meme in the style of Studio Ghibli. The 'distracted boyfriend' meme turned Studio Ghibli by OpenAI.
The ‘distracted boyfriend’ meme turned Studio Ghibli by OpenAI.

But for executives, AI means faster production, lower costs, and being able to create more content overall. This, in theory, is a good thing for fans as well. But the quandary of quantity over quality comes into question. Of course, fans want to see more of the stories and characters that they love, but not if the stories being created are being rushed with the only goal of creating profit.

The heavy reliance on AI in productions also does not produce high-quality content. Generative AI is unable to maintain continuity — meaning that a character could look entirely different from one clip to another. The technology is unable to understand nuance — making it incapable of deciphering irony or sarcasm. Lastly, AI is unable to fully capture the emotional experience of humanity. As much as it may try to reconstruct a heartfelt experience from data, it can not currently construct a convincing emotional narrative. 5

When AI uses data to create stories, it is not coming from lived experience. So while it is able to construct stories with arcs and resolutions, oftentimes the resulting stories will feel “too perfect.” The stories come across as hollow because AI is unable to have a unique voice. A person’s upbringing, community, education, and morals affect their unique voice, and AI mimicking prominent artists’ styles is stealing that voice. The creator of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, someone who has directly experienced his art style being stolen by AI, has said, “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”6

We can see this played out in The Amazing Digital Circus. Caine creates adventures that he believes will resonate with humans, but every adventure falls flat with his audience. Caine does not understand what it means when the humans ask for “an adventure grounded in reality.” Caine’s reality has always been the circus. He does not know anything about normal human experiences, leaving his adventures feeling hollow for the humans.

Caine In Control — AI Vs. Humans

Caine takes his task of creating adventures very seriously. The humans are never thrilled to participate — they all just want to get back to their real lives — but Caine is angered by their nonplussed attitudes, generating increasingly sinister adventures. As the humans become more unhappy with the adventures — some refusing to go on them altogether — Caine gradually sours towards the humans.

Caine is unable to empathize with the others. This fact is most evident when he attempts to have a therapy session with Zooble. Zooble expresses that they have already told Caine why they don’t want to go on adventures, but Caine never listens.

Zooble tells Caine that the problem is with their own identity, hating the body that they are stuck in, and never feeling right, no matter what parts they switch out. Caine is unable to understand, just giving them a box of parts and breezing past the issue, calling it “solved.”

During episode five: “Untitled,” Caine indulges the humans by using their adventure ideas that they had submitted in a suggestion box. Caine ends up having an identity crisis of sorts when he sees that the humans enjoy the suggestion box adventures more than the ones he has made for them. He views the adventures as his “art” and the entire purpose he was made, causing him to question himself in a way that feels very human.

“Oh, Zooble, Zooble, Zooble, making adventures is my art! It’s all I exist to do! All I’m…good at. A-And, uh… w-what you’re saying could imply that I’m bad at the only thing I’m good at, and that…that’d be…”7

While this “identity crisis” feels human, it is likely a learned pattern. As Caine now only has the six humans to collect additional data from, it could be inferred that Caine’s crisis is learned behavior from Zooble, replicating their feelings of insecurity.

More broadly, Caine symbolizes how our current society consumes media. Entertainment has become a form of distraction to keep people from giving in to despair, as so many awful things are going on in the world. Social media algorithms are designed to keep people in a never-ending “doomscrolling” loop, while TV shows and movies are written for “second screen viewing.

These tactics give instant gratification and put people at ease, making online entertainment inescapable. Caine attempts to do the same thing. His role is to distract more than entertain the humans, to keep them from thinking too long about how they are eternally trapped in the circus. Because there is an exit to the circus, but it is not easy for them to find.

The Humans Of The Circus

When each human gets transported into The Amazing Digital Circus, they retain the memories of their previous life, but no longer remember their names. They no longer look human, but instead look like a character: Pomni, a jester; Jax, a bunny; Ragatha, a rag doll; Gangle, a red ribbon with a mask; Zooble, a mix-and-match toy; and Kinger, a chess piece.

“Ragatha’s the cheerful one, Gangle’s the sad one, Kinger’s the crazy one, Zooble’s the grumpy one, and you are the one who hasn’t figured that out yet. We all just became archetypes.”8

On the surface, each of the characters falls into an archetype. But as the episodes go on, you begin to see each character break out of these tropes. Each human of the circus displays characteristics that make them deeply human, no matter how absurd they may look on the outside.

Empathy For NPCs — Pomni

Pomni is the newbie to the circus. She arrives right at the same time as another human, Kaufmo, abstracts. Pomni is very shaken after this, watching as Caine throws Kaufmo into the cellar without a second thought.

Her second day at the circus does not go much better. Pomni gets sent on her first adventure outside of the circus to the Candy Canyon Kingdom and meets a non-playable character (NPC) named GummyGoo. GummyGoo is a gummy crocodile who was created by Caine to be an enemy to the humans on the adventure, but Pomni ends up connecting with him after she tells him that he is an NPC.

“I think I know the feeling. Well, m-maybe not the e-exact feeling, but… feeling like you’re nothing is… kind of normal. I mean, people even feel like that in the world I came from… I guess I just don’t want you to feel like you’re nothing… I don’t want anybody to feel like that.”9

Pomni empathizes with this very human feeling that GummyGoo is feeling, even though he is an NPC, Pomni treats him with the same respect that she would a human. In contrast, Caine is unable to discern NPCs from humans. He keeps the humans strictly separate from the NPCs because he can not tell one from the other.

Caine snaps GummyGoo out of existence when he comes back with Pomni from the adventure. This represents the removal of Pomni’s newfound hope. Pomni was able to relate to GummyGoo’s feelings of despair, feeling lost and trapped in the digital circus. But she began to believe that things would work out, as GummyGoo did. Caine erased that hope right along with GummyGoo and left Pomni further traumatized and grieving her friend.

The Fear That Drives Us — Jax

Jax dubs himself as the “funny one.” But more often than not, he acts more as a bully, making the other humans the punchline instead of including them in on the joke — he frequently breaks the fourth wall and only refers to the humans as characters. Jax has a facade of acting nonchalant, maintaining a cocky attitude in every situation. He deliberately pushes people away because he has watched both of his friends, Kaufmo and Ribbit, become abstract.

Jax looks in a dirty bathroom mirror exhausted. "They All get guns." The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 6, Glitch Productions, 11 December 2025, YouTube.
“They All get guns.” The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 6, Glitch Productions, 11 December 2025, YouTube.

Jax seems to prefer the digital world to the real one. Through flashbacks of a dark, empty road in Jax’s past and his choice to press the “stay in the circus” button when theoretically given the option to leave,10 he has some sort of traumatic past that he does not want to confront.

Humor is Jax’s coping mechanism, but he is deeply struggling no matter how much he tries to laugh it off. Jax has dissociation episodes and has intense and increasingly frequent panic attacks. This is particularly concerning because this could mean that he is getting closer to abstraction.

While Caine panicked at the idea of not being good at making adventures because that is the one task he was created to do, Jax’s panic shows a distinct facet of humanity. Jax’s dread over the lack of community in his real life and the grief over the loss of his community in the circus are deeply human feelings. He is deeply scared of losing more people that he cares about, but even more scared of going back to a world where nobody cares about him at all.

The Face Of “Toxic Positivity” — Ragatha

Ragatha is the “cheerful one.” She acts as the inverse of Jax. Ragatha is always smiling with a positive attitude and acts as Pomni’s mentor when she arrives at the circus. Ragatha copes with the circus by trying to be there for everybody else, but fails in being true to herself.

Ragatha gestures with a smile on her face. "Pilot." The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 1, Glitch Productions, 13 October 2023, YouTube.
“Pilot.” The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 1, Glitch Productions, 13 October 2023, YouTube.

The other humans of the circus love Ragatha, but find it hard to be around her because they can not tell how genuine she actually is.11 It is not until episode five that the group finds themselves at a bar that Ragatha opens up about her life. She grew up on a farm, in a wealthy family with a verbally abusive mother.

A shadowed version of Ragatha's mother looms over her. "Untitled." The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 5, Glitch Productions, 20 June 2025, YouTube.
“Untitled.” The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 5, Glitch Productions, 20 June 2025, YouTube.

Ragatha’s people-pleaser personality is likely attributed to her childhood, trying to be perfect enough for her mother. But Ragatha is far from perfect. She begins to get jealous and insecure as Pomni and Jax become closer. Ragatha does not get along with Jax, so it hurts her even more to see Pomni gravitating towards him.

All of Ragatha’s imperfections are what make her such a profoundly human character. Jealousy is not an emotion that AI can express. While Ragatha desires to be liked, Caine’s appetite lies in successfully achieving his task. Ragatha cares about those around her, but because of her upbringing, she is unintentionally keeping them at arm’s length. Her “toxic positivity” pushes people away, leaving her struggling with feelings of loneliness and insecurity.

The Many Faces We Wear — Gangle

Gangle is the “sad one.” She switches out different masks that she wears — her comedy mask and tragedy mask mainly — which often reflect how she is feeling. Although the masks act as a form of expression, Gangle can smile even while wearing her tragedy mask.

Gangle wears her tragedy mask, comedy one in hand. "They All get guns." The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 6, Glitch Productions, 11 December 2025, YouTube.
“They All get guns.” The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 6, Glitch Productions, 11 December 2025, YouTube.

In episode four: “Fast Food Masquerade,” it is revealed that Gangle worked as a fast food manager in the real world. Gangle had a dream of becoming a manga artist but gave up on that dream, instead working a job she hated. The masks that Gangle now wears in the circus are representative of the constant mask that she had to wear while working in customer service, and the toll that it took on her.

It is implied that Gangle struggles with depression. Her comedy mask frequently breaks as a depiction of her emotional state collapsing in tandem. Gangle’s past of having to give up her dreams in order to sustain herself, but losing herself in the process, is a heavily relatable story.

Switching Out Your Parts — Zooble

Zooble is the “grumpy one.” They are a mix-and-match style toy, and throughout every episode can be seen with different parts. Zooble’s circus character design is something that they are consistently unhappy with. They keep switching out their parts, but always feel wrong in their body.

Zooble looks up angrily. "hjsakldfhl." The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 8, Glitch Productions, 20 March 2026, YouTube.
“hjsakldfhl.” The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 8, Glitch Productions, 20 March 2026, YouTube.

Zooble is referred to with they/them pronouns and is a nonbinary character. They are cynical and often refuse to participate in adventures, outwardly expressing disinterest in the childish games. While they butt heads with Caine and outwardly appear as “grumpy,” they are a calming influence for Gangle. When Gangle asks them how to deal with the hard parts of herself, Zooble tells her to accept every part:

“Cause it exists. It’s a part of you that’s real, and the only “you” that you should care about is the real you. You have to choose to love yourself, even if it doesn’t make sense. It’s not natural, it’s intentional.”12

“They All get guns.” The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 6, Glitch Productions, 11 December 2025, YouTube.

Zooble’s circus design is a great representation of one’s reconciliation with gender and identity. Zooble is one of the youngest members of the circus, and their throughline of switching out their parts to try and find their identity is raw. Growing up is such a human experience — to rediscover yourself and build a new identity that feels you entirely — an experience that Caine is unable to relate to. Caine didn’t have a childhood or any growing up to do, as he is incapable of empathizing with Zooble’s identity struggles.

The Wisdom Of Our Elders — Kinger

Kinger is the “crazy one.” He was part of the first group that entered the digital circus, and the only one left of that group. It is also revealed that he was a former worker of C&A — the company that created The Amazing Digital Circus — and was one of the people who created Caine.

Kinger looks up from his fort. "Beach episode." The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 7, Glitch Productions, 12 December 2025, YouTube.
“Beach episode.” The Amazing Digital Circus. Episode 7, Glitch Productions, 12 December 2025, YouTube.

Because of his prolonged time in the circus, he is often erratic and nonsensical, hence being called crazy. However, when it is dark, Kinger gets brought back to a fond memory, causing him to be the sensible, logical person he truly is.

Hiding inside his pillow fort or with a bucket on his head, Kinger can be a dependable force that his friends can rely on. Caine is intimidated by him, trying to always keep tabs on him and keep him out of dark areas. As he is one of the creators of the circus and Caine himself, Kinger knows much more than the rest of the humans — even if he isn’t always able to access that intelligence.

Kinger can alter things in the digital world like Caine. Ultimately, when attempting to fix Caine’s code, he deletes him altogether. While Caine had acted as the God-like entity of the circus, Kinger had the utmost power and control. Kinger is likely the key to the humans’ escape from the digital circus.

A Success For Humanity

A dark comedy such as The Amazing Digital Circus could never have been made with AI. The amount of detail that Glitch Productions has poured into every frame has created a story that people will continue to dissect long after its ending. Episode nine: “The Last Act” will be released in theaters two weeks before its release on YouTube and Netflix on June 19, 2026. This is exciting news for an indie animation project, as tickets sold fast due to high demand, leading them to expand to more theaters across North America and internationally.

The Amazing Digital Circus stands as a beautiful example of passion-driven art. While the characters look far from human, they are complex characters that feel like real people. Caine, as the sole AI in the circus, shines a spotlight on the humanity apparent in all six members. The humans are messy and flawed, but through their connections to one another, they can embrace those flaws as part of themselves.

In an era of AI on the rise in all modes of art, The Amazing Digital Circus shows artists just how much fans appreciate human creativity. With humans only involved in its production, and layered commentaries about AI through its characters, The Amazing Digital Circus sets a precedent for what the future of animation could be, with a focus on humanity in the digital era.
