‘Flow’ (2024) Is The Movie That Spoke So Much Without Any Dialogue

Flow (2024; Gints Zilbalodis)1, a movie about a cat surviving a flood, struck big at the 97th Oscars ceremony2. The independent animated feature film from Latvia won its nomination in the best animated feature film category against big-budget contenders like Inside Out 2 (2024; Kelsey Mann)3 and The Wild Robot (2024; Chris Sanders)4.

Flow (2024)5 is more than a visually striking animated feature — it uses silence and subtle storytelling to explore themes of solitude, survival, and the impact of climate change, proving that animation can be just as thought-provoking without spoken words.

“Alone, Alert, and Alive” — The Cat As A Symbol Of Solitude & Survival

The black cat has long held an iconic place in human history, seen by many as a creature of both luck and mystery. On the positive side, it is often believed to offer protection from evil, usher in prosperity, and attract good fortune. On the flip side, black cats are also seen as harbingers of bad luck — symbols of misfortune, superstition, and ominous warnings in folklore and myth. They are a known symbol around Halloween6 season and often show up as the animal sidekick of witches.

This is where their association with dark magic and witchcraft stems from. Cats domesticated themselves in the early ages of the Fertile Crescent 7and haven’t changed much since ancient times. Human civilizations like Mesopotamia8 allowed them easy access to food, where they lived among humans, hunting rodents. The ancient Egyptians9 had a special relationship with cats, which were highly revered.

They looked at cats as protector deities.10 Black cats are often seen as representations of femininity and divine energy, celebrated for their independence, intuition, and quiet intelligence. Their mysterious presence has long been linked to spiritual power, mystique, and the sacred feminine.

The Cat’s Journey In Flow — Survival, Emotion, & Curiosity

The main character in Flow is a black cat whom we will refer to as the Cat. In the beginning, the Cat is hunted by a pack of dogs after stealing their fish, which is a prime example of survival in the wild. Before the flood, the relationship between all animals was predator and prey. They avoided each other and stayed within their own groups unless they needed to hunt.

As we watch the Cat navigate its solitary survival, we witness a range of emotions unfold — fear, panic, caution, and patience all come into play. Through subtle cues in its body language — ears flattening back, tail tucked tightly between its legs, and its body curling smaller to disappear — the Cat’s feelings become clear without a single sound.

As they navigate the world alone, they are cautious to be safe and protective, but even animals can be curious. The well-known proverb, “Curiosity killed the cat but the truth brought it back to life,” is the belief that knowledge is power.

That same curiosity can sometimes put the Cat in danger, but ultimately, seeking the truth is what keeps it safe. This idea also echoes the old belief that Cats have nine lives. In Flow, there are countless moments where the Cat faces near-death — like falling from the sky or plunging into deep water — yet somehow, it manages to survive again and again, proving its resilience time after time.

“From Strangers To Companions” — How Flow Builds Emotional Bonds Through Behavior

Throughout the Cat’s journey, it encounters a wide variety of animals — each adding a layer of texture to its world. From the familiar presence of dogs to the unexpected appearance of a monkey, a capybara, a lemur, deer, a rabbit hare, and even a majestic whale, the Cat crosses paths with creatures big and small. Birds flutter overhead and fish swim beneath, creating a rich and dynamic ecosystem that the Cat must navigate with both curiosity and caution.

The emotional connection between the characters unfolds through their survival instincts and the way they interact in moments of tension, trust, and uncertainty. Their relationships aren’t built on dialogue but on behavior — how they move around each other, when they choose to help, and how they react in moments of danger.

Much of that emotional depth also stems from how long these animals have been in each other’s lives, revealing bonds formed over time through shared experiences, mutual understanding, and instinctive communication.

When the Cat meets another animal, loses them, and reunites later, their relationship grows. The Cat is shy and fearful of others at first, but as the movie goes on, they slowly start to open up more and build companionship, appreciating company.

Flow begins with the Cat alone, staring at their reflection in a pool of water. At first, everything seems normal — the animals keep to themselves and follow the natural order; dogs chase cats, cats chase rodents, and the secretary birds soar overhead, hunting fish. As the Cat drinks, a sudden burst of barking and movement from a nearby pack of dogs startles them. The Cat notices their presence but continues on, unaware that a bond with these very dogs will form later on.

After the Cat is startled and chased by the pack of dogs for stealing their fish, they are back in the safety of their home. One of those dogs is a Labrador Retriever11 who wants to play and become friends, even inviting the Cat into the pack, while the others take no interest in such a thing.

We see the Lab get defensive when a Secretary Bird stands over the Cat. The Cat doesn’t know what to make of this but carefully observes them. Later on, that same Secretary Bird defends the Cat and the Lab from the leader of the bird pack who does not want them there.

“Outsiders Together” — Forging Family Across Difference

Besides the Capybara,12 the other animals are separated from their packs because their packs were not accepting of the others. As we saw when the Secretary Bird was cast out for standing up to the leader in defense of his Cat friend, group dynamics can shift quickly in the face of conflict.

Similarly, when the Lemur tried to welcome the other Lemur pack from the neighboring boat, the attempt at unity was cut short — the newcomers were frightened off by another animal, highlighting how fragile trust can be when fear and uncertainty are in the mix.

The dog pack also joined them at one point, but the union didn’t last because of the tension the Cat already had with them. The Cat and its new companions are obviously outsiders because they each belong to different animal species. The alphas of their original packs never accepted their friends because it is their job to protect the pack.

By the end, the Cat and their group of animal companions are together — safe, having weathered a long and uncertain journey to survive the flood.

Once again, the Cat gazes at their reflection in a pool of water, but this time, they’re not alone. It’s a quiet, powerful moment that reflects how high-stakes circumstances can forge unlikely bonds, bringing different creatures together in unity and forming lasting friendships across their differences.

“When the Waters Rise” — The Devastating Reach Of Environmental Disasters

Floods are huge, abnormal, and destructive amounts of water that overflow spaces. Environmental disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and extreme thunderstorms can bring bad flooding to areas with humans and animals.

The effects of these disasters can spread fungus and bacteria that can infect both animals and people. We have seen this fatally happen in Joplin, Missouri,13 after an F5 tornado14 tore through the town on May 22, 2011.

A cluster of tornado victims started falling ill to a fungal infection, in which 5 people were killed. Flood damage can clog up subway stations, basements, and shelters, take the power out, and cause thousands in property damage.

Natural disasters like floods can be so strong that they can take out anything in their path, tearing down structures and trees and changing the natural landscape.

“From Ruins To Rafts” — How Animals Rebuild After Displacement

As the flood grows, animal habitats are destroyed, washing away their homes and making their environment unlivable. The flood waters can kill plants and carry objects into new areas, spreading things into places they aren’t supposed to be.

Both wild and domesticated animals, including pets and livestock, can become separated or lost, even ending up in other people’s backyards. Before the flood, the Cat makes its way around an area filled with cat statues and enters a house through a broken window. The house is their home, as shown by the cat statues and the human bed they sleep on.

This indicates the absence of humans — but what happened to them? The Cat’s removal from their habitat because of the flood changes everything for them and reveals the answer.

“A New Kind Of Home” — Cooperation & Survival On The Boat

While trying to get away from the flood, the Cat is picked up by a secretary bird and dropped into a boat, where they meet the Capybara. The boat sails past a lemur who is a collector of human valuables. When the flood reaches the lemur’s home, he stays behind to try and save his belongings.

Knowing his home will be destroyed, the Capybara saves him by dragging him into the boat along with a basket of his valuables. It is now the Capybara, Lab, Cat, and Lemur 15on the boat, and they begin making it their home.

They mark their territories through hissing at each other, peeing in a certain spot, or, in the case of the lemurs, setting up their space with their valuables.

Despite having different personalities and possessiveness, they still took care of each other, especially during rough storms by keeping watch and making room for shelter under the deck. When the Cat nearly drowned, a whale showed up and lifted it to the surface, saving the Cat from drowning.

There are other moments where they save each other from falling out of the boat to keep them on board. We see the moment the Cat finally takes a leap of faith and fearlessly dives into the water to fish and feed the boat, showcasing their survival methods.

They each do their part, and as the Secretary Bird16 joins them, it becomes the navigator and captain. The animals give each other offerings as acts of kindness and gestures of approval.

“A World Without Us” — Traces Of Humanity In An Abandoned Earth

The Cat’s journey, with its solitary rhythm, feels so natural and calming that the absence of human characters almost goes unnoticed — until you catch sight of dogs running freely, with no owners to call them back.

There aren’t any people in the film at all, yet human objects and structures remain, silent reminders of a past presence. These buildings and belongings are overtaken by moss and overgrown plants, showing that no one is around to stop nature from reclaiming and flourishing in their absence.

This indicates that humans were wiped out by the disastrous effects of climate change before the film’s events. Climate change is due to human mistreatment of the earth from deforestation, burning fossil fuels, and certain agricultural practices, which emit greenhouse gases.

The big flood is one of its effects. The rising sea levels and rushing flood water probably caused deaths and displacement, pushing humans into an exodus out of the area. In a short time, extinction became inevitable. The drastic shifts in weather and environment have rendered the world of Flow uninhabitable for humans. This theme of humanity’s inevitable downfall by nature is explored in many forms of pop culture, like Death of a Unicorn (2025; Alex Scharfman)17 and “The Last Of Us” (2013).18

“Where Did the People Go?” — Climate Collapse & The Silent World Of Flow

Unlike many other animations, Flow doesn’t overwhelm with bright colors. Instead, it uses cooler tones — greens and blues — that are gentle on the eyes. The film is set in nature, with a calm pace and minimal distractions, making it easy to follow.

There are visually striking scenes showcasing endless natural beauty: flowers, greenery, stone boulders, waterfalls, rivers, and insects. A scene that stands out is the cat paradise, where countless tiny white butterflies flutter through the air among sunlight and delicate white flowers blooming from the ground.

The light symbolizes heaven, while the white represents purity and innocence. Another visually striking moment is the departure of the Secretary Bird against the backdrop of the galaxy sky. The bold, dark colors and flashy lights transform into swirling stars scattered across the universe.

The animals on the boat pass beneath the Northern Lights, highlighting the breathtaking beauty of an eternal sky. The film then takes us soaring past giant stone boulders so high they’re nestled among the clouds.

For a moment, these otherworldly scenes transport us to an earthy, alien-like world reminiscent of Pandora19 from the Avatar20 franchise. Unlike most animated films that rely on dialogue and voice actors to bring characters to life, Flow uses the sounds of the natural world and animal behavior to shape its characters. The pounding of paws on grass, movement through brush, feet striking the ground, and splashes in water create a vivid soundscape.

By focusing on visual and sound effects, the film offers a simple, calming experience that allows viewers space to reflect on its lessons and meaning. Flow communicates with its audience through themes of love and courage, gently reminding us of our shared human nature.
