“Guts & Blackpowder” (2021) — Roblox’s Hidden Gem

“Guts & Blackpowder” (2021) is a multiplayer zombie survival game developed by Fuze Studios. It is available on “Roblox” (2006), a popular online game platform and creation system.1 The game is set during the Napoleonic Wars. Players take on the role of soldiers from various regiments and nations forced to band together to survive hordes of flesh-eating undead.2

“Guts & Blackpowder” distinguishes itself from other games on its platform with its unique premise, its engaging gameplay, and the integrity of its developers. It is a marvelous title amidst an ocean of games hosted on “Roblox,” many of which tend to focus on monetization over providing a quality experience. This combination of historical framing, mechanical restraint, and cooperative design is what defines the game’s identity and separates it from typical “Roblox” experiences.

What Makes “Guts & Blackpowder” Stand Out

Unlike most zombie games, “Guts & Blackpowder” favors a blocky depiction of the world over a realistic one. This aesthetic is the norm for games created on “Roblox,” and some might find amusement in the way it contrasts with the atmosphere of apocalyptic dread that is typical of the zombie genre. But the game’s aesthetic is far from the only thing that differentiates it from other titles.

The setting of the game delivers a fresh take on zombie games, which are usually set in modern times, and the limitations of its setting work to add a layer of intensity to its gameplay. These limitations work with the lethality of the game’s zombies to create a high-stakes gameplay experience in which the slightest lapse in a player’s attention or judgment could mean their character’s death. These high stakes mesh well with the game’s class-based design and push players to work together if they want to win. To understand how these design choices shape gameplay, it is necessary to examine the game’s historical setting in more detail.

The Setting Of “Guts & Blackpowder”

In the early 1800s, most of Europe found itself at the musket-end of the newly created First French Empire, led by Napoleon Bonaparte.3 In the world of “Guts & Blackpowder,” the Napoleonic wars and most other wars in Europe played out as they did in real life. The game’s world diverged from the real world when “The Blight,” a deadly infection that spread amongst soldiers on both sides, emerged during the Russo-Turkish war.

The Blight was contained, but only temporarily. After the burning of Moscow, the victims of the Blight reanimated as man-eating zombies. The belligerents of the Napoleonic wars continued fighting, unaware of the undead threat making its way across Europe. Eventually, a ceasefire was called, but it did little to stop the Blight.4 These historical and fictional constraints directly inform how combat functions, particularly in the game’s weapon and survival systems.

As soldiers, the player characters of “Guts & Blackpowder” wield proper weapons and are trained in their use. Players often default to using melee weapons to deal with zombie hordes since the firearms they possess are far from automatic weapons.5 Only one bullet is in a firearm’s chamber, and reloading it is a slow and risky process. This limitation encourages players to think about their shots tactically. A missed shot could be deadly. Wasting a shot on a low-threat target allows a higher-threat target to close the distance between itself and a player before that player can even think about reloading their firearm.

The gameplay of “Guts & Blackpowder” differs greatly from most other zombie shooter games, in which the player points their weapon at a horde and unloads its entire magazine. While some zombie games are less generous than “Guts & Blackpowder” with giving the player guns, the firearm options they present don’t usually have the reloading time of a typical nineteenth-century firearm. The setting of “Guts & Blackpowder” allows it to set itself apart from the typical design of zombie shooters and acts as one of multiple factors that contribute to its high-risk gameplay. While weapon limitations shape moment-to-moment combat, the game’s broader design emphasizes player fragility itself.

The Stakes Of “Guts & Blackpowder”

In other zombie games, players often take on the role of spectacular individuals such as a witty journalist who has covered wars, a cheerleader who waves a chainsaw as easily as a pom-pom, and a former cop with a penchant for one-liners. Furthermore, many other zombie games limit the damage that the undead can deal. Players may be able to easily survive a scratch or a bite, both of which do nothing but lower their health bar by an inconsequential amount. However, a zombie game’s difficulty may vary if it has difficulty sliders, which adjust how hard the game is.

There are no difficulty sliders in “Guts & Blackpowder,” but there is a hardcore mode, which makes enemies more lethal. The stakes of the game remain high even if hardcore mode is not enabled because the player’s character is not particularly special. They are just one of many soldiers thrust into a situation they were not prepared for, which means that it is easy for them to die. A player who lags behind their whole team can be done in by only two zombies if one of the zombies can grab them. If enough zombies grab onto a player, they are instantly overwhelmed and killed regardless of how much health they have.6 This fragility is amplified by a diverse roster of enemy types, each designed to punish different forms of player error.

Like other zombie games, “Guts & Blackpowder” has a variety of undead to throw at a player.7 One of them is the runner, who possesses glowing red eyes and high speed, but has low durability. If a player is tackled by a runner, another player must save them within seconds, or they will die immediately, regardless of how much health they have. A player can even be tackled by two runners at the same time, which cuts down the time that others have to save them.

Another type of undead is the bomber, the bane of new players and any player brave enough to lead their team ahead. Bombers explode upon death or if they get close enough to a player. The zapper is a slow and durable zombie with an axe that deals a massive amount of damage. The igniter is a zombie that can throw a lantern at players to disrupt their formation and restrict their movement options. The dreaded cuirassier is an armored zombie with a talent for swordplay that persists even in death, and they are capable of instantly incapacitating a player by charging at them with their sabre.

The game punishes players for failing to keep their teammates alive by resurrecting players who run out of health as “viral” zombies. These “virals” are twice as strong as their normal counterparts and have two variants: a viral zapper and a viral runner. The viral zapper is faster than a normal zapper, which allows it to deal damage quickly. The viral runner is capable of quickly infecting players. In “Guts & Blackpowder,” players are not entirely powerless against the undead. Because each enemy type exploits different weaknesses, survival depends less on individual skill and more on coordinated class-based teamwork.

Teamwork In “Guts & Blackpowder”

The fragility of players in “Guts & Blackpowder” leads to them compensating with numbers and diversity. Up to twenty people can play the game on a public server. Each player must choose one of the game’s classes to play as: Infantry, Officer, Seaman, Sapper, Musician, Surgeon, or Chaplain. A player’s class affects their arsenal, abilities, and role in their team. Infantry have access to a wider range of firearms and melee weapons. Officers have a charge ability that causes players near them to move and attack faster, which could potentially turn the tide of battle if their group is cornered. The Seaman is given access to a variety of firearms with a large spread, which allows them to cut down hordes of undead with ease.

Other classes lack access to firearms but possess special skills and equipment instead. A Sapper wields a large, slow melee weapon and can build structures that are useful when their group needs to defend an area. The Musician provides a buff to other players by playing their instrument near their group, and the Surgeon can heal any wounded soldiers. The Chaplain helps players avoid being infected and can stall zombies by brandishing a crucifix exorcist-style.8

The classes rely on each other in many ways. The Infantry’s arsenal can only do so much without supporting classes to assist them. Most classes rarely get far without a Surgeon to fix their wounds or a Chaplain to prevent them from turning into zombies. The Officer’s charge and the Musician’s buff are designed to assist other players. The Sapper’s fortifications are useful, but their lack of firearms can prove to be an issue if a bomber approaches them.

Teamwork is key to survival in “Guts & Blackpowder,” at least for most players who aren’t skilled enough to forgo a team and play the game solo. The game’s class system encourages players to play to their strengths, rely on the strengths of their teammates, and compensate for their teammates’ weaknesses. It’s a thoughtfully designed system that works in tandem with the game’s high-stakes gameplay and its unique premise to make “Guts & Blackpowder” stand out. Beyond its internal design, the game also stands out within the broader “Roblox” ecosystem, where monetization practices often influence gameplay structure.

“Roblox” And Aggressive Monetization

“Roblox” hosts many kinds of games, such as first-person shooters, adventure games, obstacle courses, and tycoon games. Some of these games fit into more than one genre, and many of them are based on popular, established IPs. Many “Roblox” games happen to be aggressively monetized.

“Roblox” has an in-game currency known as “Robux,” which is primarily used to buy cosmetic items for its in-game avatars or add-ons known as “game passes.” Many game passes grant gameplay advantages, encouraging players to purchase them. This monetization tends to influence the design of games on “Roblox.” Game passes that grant rewards are made twice as enticing when earning those rewards would otherwise require long, tedious hours of gameplay.

Not all “Roblox” games are aggressively monetized, but enough of them are for that monetization to be noticeable. “Roblox” developers need to make revenue somehow, so few can blame them for monetizing their games. Making a game on the platform is a big investment, and it is natural for developers to want a return on that investment. How “Guts & Blackpowder” handles monetization is part of what makes it a hidden gem. This context makes “Guts & Blackpowder” approach to monetization particularly notable.

Why This Game Feels Different

Game passes for “Guts & Blackpowder” are sold, but they all contain only cosmetics and do not impact gameplay. They include playable regiments for nineteenth-century military enthusiasts and accessories for players who want to spruce up their characters’ looks.9 These game passes are a way for the game’s developers to earn extra revenue without making the game pay-to-win, which is a breath of fresh air on “Roblox.”

The developers’ integrity is especially noticeable considering the sheer quality of their game. The thoughtful design of the game’s classes and zombie types, the deep lore of the Blight, and the inclusion of in-game voice lines by talented voice actors contribute to the overall atmosphere of “Guts & Blackpowder.” The game’s voice lines have reportedly cost thousands so far and are well worth the developers’ investment.10 Taken together, its mechanical design, cooperative structure, and monetization approach reinforce a consistent design philosophy centered on fairness and immersion.

“Guts & Blackpowder” — A Rare Example Of Integrity

“Guts & Blackpowder” is a well-designed zombie survival game that offers a fresh take on the genre. It is a passion project on a platform where games seem to focus on monetization over passion. Its commitment to solid gameplay, atmosphere and story make it stand out from other games on “Roblox.”

It continues to receive updates, and recent posts from its official YouTube channel seem to indicate that new voice lines will soon be added to it.11 There even appears to be a new map for the game in development, which shows how its content continues to grow.12 “Guts & Blackpowder” remains active today and has thousands of players.13
