Harry Potter and Aang side by side

Hogwarts Houses Versus The Four Elements

Both Harry Potter and Avatar: The Last Airbender have large, passionate fanbases. For years, fans have taken the sorting hat quiz on Pottermore to see which Hogwarts house they would belong in and speculated on which element they would bend. We might not have considered what element each house would bend or which house the members of the gaang would belong to. Are there similarities between the four Hogwarts houses and four elements?

Which Elements Would The Hogwarts Houses Be?

There are four houses at Hogwarts: Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Gryffindor. Each Hogwarts house is known for having certain characteristics. Hufflepuffs are known for being patient, loyal, and fair. Ravenclaws are known for their wisdom, cleverness, and wit. Slytherins are known for being ambitious, cunning, and resourceful. Finally, Gryffindors are known for being courageous, chivalrous, and determined.

Each element has certain characteristics associated with it as well and could therefore be paired with a Hogwarts house. For example, Hufflepuff would belong to air. Since members of this house are known for being patient and fair, air would make the most sense. Air benders and air nomads are portrayed as being patient and fair throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender. They don’t believe in killing others and live peacefully as much as possible.

Ravenclaw would be paired with water. Not only do both of these pair well because they are the same color (blue), but water needs to be flexible and adaptable, as the members of Ravenclaw. The books and movies don’t portray anyone outside of Slytherin or Gryffindor well enough to deeply understand each house. However, one primary character who is part of Ravenclaw house is Luna Lovegood. Luna is an underrated character who is much smarter than anyone gives her credit for. She thinks differently than others and looks at things from a different perspective.

Slytherin is easier to categorize. Slytherins are typically portrayed as being evil and hot-headed. With these characteristics in mind, we see this in our main Slytherin character, Draco Malfoy. Draco and Harry immediately get off on the wrong foot when Draco insults Harry’s future best friend, Ron Weasley when they first get to Hogwarts. From there, the two remain enemies throughout the series.

Draco is portrayed as the bad guy from the very beginning of Harry Potter. He gets easily mad at those around him, much like Zuko in the early seasons of Avatar. There are many similarities between Draco and Zuko. Both are quite cunning and ambitious. Zuko spends almost the entire series trying to hunt down and capture Aang to restore his honor. The wrong people surround Draco, and he is given the mission of killing Dumbledore. Because of their unwavering desire to succeed, both would belong to fire.

Finally, we are left with Gryffindor and earth. There’s no doubt that our favorite Gryffindor, Harry Potter, is brave and determined. After all, he faces off against Voldemort multiple times in the seven-book series and even defeats him by himself in the final battle. For this reason, Harry would bend earth. Bending this element takes determination and perseverance. Earth is a stubborn element and takes determination to learn. Sometimes it might not work, but you have to keep trying. Harry’s perseverance is clear throughout the books, and for this reason, he would excel in earthbending.

Gaang Members And Hogwarts Houses

Just because certain Hogwarts houses might be associated with certain elements doesn’t necessarily mean that our favorite benders belong to those same houses. For example, Aang is an Airbender in the show, and air here is associated with Hufflepuff. However, I don’t think Aang would belong in Hufflepuff. I think Aang would be in Gryffindor since he is a natural leader, even if he doesn’t want to be. From the beginning of the series, Aang comes out of the iceberg, and the whole world is looking to him to save them from the Fire Lord’s reign.

Aang has no choice but to step up and defend all the innocent people of the world. Aang is brave and determined to succeed while remaining peaceful the whole time. For this reason, Aang would belong to Gryffindor. Similarly, I think Sokka would also belong to Gryffindor. Sokka constantly refers to himself as the leader of the group, and although they mock him for it, I believe he is. He has all the qualities of a leader. He is resilient and constantly trying to improve himself, whether it be his fighting skills or something else. He doesn’t let the fact that he can’t bend stop him from fighting and doing the same things that the rest of the group can.

Katara, Zuko, And Toph

Katara would belong to Ravenclaw. Katara is cunning and extremely smart. A lot of the time, she is the one who comes up with plans to get the gaang out of a sticky situation. She remains calm and uses her surroundings to her advantage. She’s quick on her feet and is able to easily react to whatever is thrown at her with grace. Zuko, as I mentioned earlier, would belong to Slytherin.

In the earlier seasons, he is hot-headed but stubborn and cunning. He is ambitious in his hunt for Aang and doesn’t give up no matter how many times he fails. He would fit right in with Slytherin. I believe Toph would belong in Hufflepuff. She’s a very go-with-the-flow type of person. She is also extremely patient when she teaches Aang earthbending. At first, she gets frustrated with him, but she knows that he’ll get it and keeps teaching him no matter how much he wants to give up. She is loyal to the group even though she is the last one to join them.

Which Hogwarts House Or Element Do You Belong To?

Personally, I am a Slytherin, according to the official Pottermore quiz (which is the only one that matters). When it comes to bending, I believe I would be a firebender. Not only am I a fire sign, but I am also determined and resilient, much like fire can be. Even if it goes out, it can burn brightly again after being reignited. I frequently find myself burning brightly again after difficult times.

Where would you rank? If you’re the leader of your friend group and always the one that takes the initiative, you would likely be a Gryffindor and earth bender. If you’re more chill and like to go-with-the-flow or what everybody else is doing, then you’re probably a Hufflepuff and air bender. If you excel in school, get good grades, and always bring fresh perspectives inside and outside of the classroom, you are likely a Ravenclaw and water bender.

Finally, if you’re the sly friend who always sneakily gets away with stuff, then you’d be a Slytherin and fire bender. Regardless of which Hogwarts house you would belong to or which element you would bend, each one is necessary to keep the balance. Each one brings unique and valuable perspectives, and you should be proud of whichever one you get.
