Top Beginner-Friendly Champions For Each Role In “League Of Legends” (2009)

Having teammates in games can be daunting as each role has designated rules and responsibilities, especially if you do not know which character to choose out of all the possibilities. Rest assured, you are not alone in encountering that situation; here is a short guide on which champions are best for each role in “League of Legends.”

These champions are beginner-friendly and offer a valuable opportunity for gaining a better understanding of “League of Legends'” basic mechanics and overall structure of this multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game.

The Five Roles Of “League Of Legends”

“League of Legends” is a 5v5 game and in the “standard” mode of playing in Summoners Rift, there is a set of guidance players follow in order to succeed in the game (destroying the enemy’s Nexus). Initially, “League of Legends” may appear complicated, particularly if you have no prior experience with MOBAs, but the more you play, the more you understand.

There are three lanes in the game: top, middle, and bottom; for each lane, there is ideally one designated player from each team except for the bottom lane where there are two players (ideally a marksman and support). Additionally, the player who plays in the jungle does not get a lane. It is important to note that even if you are designated a lane or position, it does not mean you are stuck there. As “League of Legends” progresses, you are bound to steer away to claim objectives and engage in team fights.

Top Laner’s Role

Many of the gaming community often joke that playing top lane is like being on an island because it is usually a 1v1 situation and you are often on your own, but that is not always true. Additionally, top laners frequently get the Teleport summoner spell in order to assist their team without having to scramble across the map.

Essentially, top lane champions consist of melee champions because a team ideally wants a tank or front line to protect the rest of the team, get in the way of the enemy’s carries, or perhaps both.

Of course, there are exceptions like Teemo, Kennen, and Jayce, who have ranged abilities but are not front-line champions. Usually, they have an advantage over melee champions at the beginning of “League of Legends.”

Garen

Garen is one of the default beefiest champions in the game due to his loaded defense kit and armor, making him most difficult for the enemy team to get a bounty off you. A notable feature that will assist you in the laning phase is his passive called “Perseverance.”

After not taking damage for a few seconds, he passively gains a percentage of his health back, so you do not have to worry about recalling back to the fountain. Overall, his passive and simple abilities including his ultimate, Demacian Justice (which is basically an execute button), make Garen an ideal champion for learning “League of Legends” without having to worry about dying all the time.

Malphite & Dr.Mundo

Other Champions that are easy to play in the top lane are Malphite and Dr.Mundo. Malphite is basically a walking boulder and his ultimate that knocks up enemy champions is one of the greatest engagement abilities in the game, but you can also use it to skillfully disengage in certain situations.

On the other hand, Dr.Mundo is like a deranged Hulk that can easily run at the enemy’s backlines, especially with his ultimate “Sadism” which gives him movement speed and rapid health regeneration. If you like stealing people’s health and soaking up the damage for your feeble teammates, he might be your ideal champion.

Jungler’s Role

While you do not get a specific lane to play as a jungler, the role lets you have the ability to farm jungle camps, the freedom to roam across the map, and secure important objectives like dragons with your Smite summoner spell.

The champions for this role are pretty diverse and you can play unique champions that either are tanky or deadly so it might be hard to pick which playstyle suits you. But, it is important that you learn the basics of farming camps, flanking, and securing objectives before finding your muse.

While you can play flashy or highly mechanical champions many people admire like Lee Sin and Kindred, it is best to stick with champions that are more tanky at the start so you do not accidentally die to the neutral monsters in the jungle. (Do not worry if you do, though, even pro players make that mistake!)

Amumu

Although his character is cursed with sadness and tears, Amumu is the ultimate jungle champion and has the ability to make the whole enemy team use their Flash in order to get away from you.

His abilities are simple to understand and he is a tank, so he has more sustainability fighting jungle camps and even having scuffs with the enemy jungler. His bandage toss ability is simple, but powerful because he can latch on enemies from a somewhat longer range and stun them.

With this, you do not need to be mechanically skilled in order to assist your team in securing kills. By landing your bandage toss on one champion and your ultimate “Curse of the Sad Mummy” on as many enemies as possible, the team fight has a higher chance of being in your favor.

Rammus and Master Yi

Rammus has a similar playstyle as Amumu but is unique because he has the ability to curl into a ball and travel certain distances depending on how fast he can go. He can menacingly chase a squishy enemy champion down and disrupt their movements.

On the other hand, Master Yi is not a tank but deals a lot of damage with just melee auto attacks and has the ability to run fast and heal quickly. It is best to learn him after you play tanks, so you understand that even if you are strong, you can not just put yourself in risky situations alone.

Middle Laner’s Role

The middle lane is an important lane because it is the fastest lane to get to the enemy’s base. It is also in between two lanes, multiple objectives, and a hidden vision. It is nerve-racking because you often have to worry about other people ganking (roaming from other positions to attack you) from all sides of the map. You also have to worry about helping your teammates more by being in the middle of everything, especially your jungler.

But, do not fear, playing in the mid lane is a rewarding experience and lets you improve your communication skills and makes your sense of awareness even higher. Usually, mid-lane champions consist of mages or those with ability power abilities to balance out the rest of the team’s attack damage abilities.

Needless to say, there are exceptions because there are assassin champions like Zed and Talon who are more difficult to master because of their mechanical skill set.

Lux

Lux is one of the most easiest and fun mages to play. She has the ability to do burst damage to unexpecting enemies and is versatile in supporting her teammates at the same time. Many people also like to play her as a support in the bot lane too because of her flexibility.

While she has lower health due to her ranged abilities, if you can stay safe in the back of team fights with her stuns, shields, and slows, you can carry team fights to the next level. In other cases where you are not doing well compared to your teammates, you can still be useful which is why Lux is a great beginner champion.

Not to mention, you will be highly satisfied when you are able to do your combo on an enemy and they get executed by your beam of sunshine (which is one of the longest-range abilities in “League of Legends”).

Annie And Malzahar

Annie and Malzahar are also mages that are fairly easy to master. Annie is known for her stuns each time she does three abilities. The biggest challenge you will face playing her is deciding who to stun along with using your “Summon: Tibbers” ability (which summons a huge fiery teddy bear).

Similarly, Malzahar is known for his disruption abilities too, especially his ultimate “Nether Grasp” which locks an enemy champion in place, making them unable to move or use their abilities.

Bottom Laners’ Roles

The bot lane is special because there are two players instead of one which makes them have to work together well from the start. This may seem frustrating especially if you are playing with someone you do not know, but if you pick an easy champion, you can make an impact whether or not you succeed in your lane.

One player usually plays the marksman, better known as “ADC” (attack damage carry), and they do physical attack damage rapidly with their auto attacks and abilities. Some champions include Vayne, Ezreal, and Twitch. Compared to other roles, the champion pool is relatively smaller. There are also exceptions and sometimes mages are played instead like Veigar and Seraphine, but that is on a whole different level (for now, at least).

The other player is the support and can either play a support mage champion or a tank. The mages often have healing and shielding abilities while the tanks often have blocking and engaging abilities. Of course, champions can have a mix of both like Alistar and Thresh.

Ashe

Ashe is a simple marksman that lets you focus on your positioning and map awareness more. Her Hawkshot ability allows you to scout hidden areas of the map and see where the enemy champions are without having to walk into unknown and dangerous territory.

Her ultimate, “Enchanted Crystal Arrow” allows her to shoot a huge glacial arrow across the whole map and the stun duration increases as it travels further. This allows her to engage from a distance and protect herself because AD carriers are often vulnerable and easy targets.

Overall, Ashe is a prime champion that lets you learn the basics of last-hitting minions and auto-attacking enemies at a safe distance. If you feel like you have mastered her, you can also take a fun approach and play her as a support, although you have to focus on building ability power rather than the usual attack damage.

Caitlyn

Caitlyn has the highest default auto-attack ranges in the game which makes her a good pick for bullying your lane opponents and also staying in the backlines and dishing as much damage as possible in team fights.

Not to mention her cupcake traps are useful in putting in bushes and alert you if someone steps in them, perfect if you are out of vision wards. Her ultimate is even more of a delight, it can snipe stragglers from an even longer distance as long as no one blocks it for them.

Blitzcrank

One of the most feared support champions of the game (he is often banned in champion select in lower or average-ranked games), Blitzcrank’s Rocket Grab lets you hook enemies toward you. If you catch squishy champions such as the AD carry or mage support, your team has a higher chance of eliminating the rest of the team.

Although it may take some time to learn how to land the ability and who to grab, his overall skill set is simplistic and can make a difference in team scrimmages whether it be defensive or offensive role. Not to mention, he is a tank, so you can protect your AD carry without having to worry too much about incoming damage.

Many of the gaming community have also said that his Rocket Ability is a high-scaling ability, meaning as time goes on, it gets even stronger or more impactful. This is due to Blitzcrank’s proficiency in picking opponents off when respawn times are prolonged.

Sona And Lulu

Arguably, Sona is the easiest mage support to play because you do not have to aim for any abilities except for her ultimate, Crescendo. What can differentiate you from other supports is if you auto-attack enemy champions once your passive is up. However, she has considerably lower health than tank supports like Blitzcrank, making her an easy target.

Lulu is somewhat similar, but instead of healing, she has shields and can enlarge herself or other allies with a click. Her Polymorph ability is most enraging for the other team, she can turn an enemy champion into a critter, temporarily disarming them.

Mastering “League Of Legends”

Overall, these champions will give you a better understanding of the fundamentals of “League of Legends.” The game may be complex and even frustrating at the start with having to cooperate and communicate with your team, but the experience will get better as you start learning and improving.

It is important to note that you will not master “League of Legends” in a few games, maybe not even a hundred. You will make mistakes, but your teammates will too, so every match will be a learning experience whether you win or lose. The key, ultimately, is to be patient and practice!
