By journeying as Link, players learned about the responsibilities they gain when they become adults and acquiring courage by facing difficult challenges. These are attributes that players carry into their adulthoods and remember learning fondly. When they recall these moments in their childhood, they are filled with the same emotions that impacted them in their young age during their adulthood.

Before its release, most companies struggled on transitioning their games into the third-dimension. This was one of the first major titles that Nintendo launched that was completely in 3D, the first being “Super Mario 64”2. It was the cornerstone to the gaming world, with it’s updated graphics, complex storytelling, brand new combat style with the Z-targeting system, and fantastic puzzle layouts. With its new mechanics, “Ocarina of Time” was accredited with the invention of gameplay mechanics that are still used in the medium today.

The dungeons of the game left lasting impressions on people, where to this day, they still recall their frustrations in trying to solve the puzzles in the Water Temple.3 It was a dungeon that required constant equipment of the iron boots by opening, closing, and reopening the item menu and adjusting the water levels of the main room to progress through the area and get to the boss. But despite the difficulty, players recall the gratification felt upon successfully completing the challenge.

After its release, critics hailed it to be the greatest game of all time. At IGN, where the author of the article, “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Review” Peer Schneider, states, “There is absolutely no question about it. Ocarina of Time is the best game on the N64 (Nintendo 64) and we can’t think of any game we’d rather play on any other system,” giving the game a 10/10 rating.

Nintendo has also heavily marketed toward nostalgic players as Nintendo fans grew up with the Nintendo 64 and played their games as children. Although Nintendo had already remastered “Ocarina of Time” on the Nintendo 3DS, fans were ecstatic at the announcement of a remake, with brand new graphics, upgraded gameplay mechanics, and possible additional content.

With the game being released exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2, it also created more incentive for people who wished to return to the franchise to purchase the console to play the game.

Netizens have announced that they never thought to purchase the new console until the remake announcement. This proved to Nintendo that when they return to a beloved franchise, they can reap the benefits of higher sales.

The numbers have shown that remakes generate twice as many sales 6than new games or remasters. As there is already an existing fanbase due, by remaking beloved games with updated hardware, it makes the game more accessible for returning players and newcomers that will get to experience a beloved series for the first time. And with every new meme and video released about “Ocarina of Time”, the excitement for the remake grew exponentially.

‘Nostalgia’ — How It Awakened an Older Generation

As the “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” trailer was aired live, and fans who watched the announcement instantly recognized the IP as soon as they heard the first three notes of “Saria’s Song.” Just those notes alone were enough to transport an entire generation of adults back to their childhoods.

They recalled all the hours they spent exploring dungeons, with 12 dungeons – 9 main dungeons and 3 mini dungeons, for players to discover and navigate. Each dungeon came with it’s own set of puzzles that could take hours to solve, and people who recalled struggling as children can return to solving those puzzles as adults, adding to the allure of returning to the franchise.

By also having the player move in time to play as young and adult Link, “Ocarina of Time” also teaches the player that sometimes things can only be done as an adult or as a child. Many side-quests had to be started as young Link and completed as adult Link. The intriguing and goofy missions allowed the player to immerse themselves in the world of Hyrule by interacting with the locals NPC’s and helping them with small tasks that reap in-game rewards by completing them.

Some missions that players remember fondly are the Epona side-quest7, where the player learns Epona’s Song from an NPC named Malon at Lon Lon Ranch as young Link, and return as adult Link. After beating Ingo in a horse race, Epona is claimed as a prize to be used to traverse Hyrule field faster.

Or the Biggoron’s Sword quest8, which was a trading quest where the player must deliver items to many different characters scattered across the kingdom within a time limit. At the end of the mission, the reward was Biggoron’s Sword, which dealt massive damage and replaced the broken Giant’s Knife.

All these quests left lasting impressions on players because they were memorable moments in the game that reaped high value rewards for their efforts. Several of those quests were optional, but by having players work towards those items created emotional gratification upon successfully completing them. The announcement of the remake left returning gamers to wonder how these memorable missions will be changed, altered, or improved.

It also has a brand new generation of gamers curious as to what is so nostalgic about this game to others. This buzz has led to people who have never played “Ocarina of Time” to play it for the first time to understand why people hail it as a memorable game.

Many have come to the franchise and have learned to love the game, playing for hours and learning just what made the game a success in 1998. Those experiences are posted online on YouTube, streamed live on streaming channels, or written about in gaming reviews 28 years after the original release.

They are remade, remastered, updated, and changed every year. However, all those fans remember their first experience. They remember the hours they spent on the couch with their friends split-screening on “Halo” or “Gears of War.” Playing online multiplayer on “Call of Duty.” Completing challenging platforming stages on “Super Mario,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog.” Companies have discovered the success of returning to their roots, to the games that made them successful.

In 2026 alone, companies have released many of their original popular video games and gamers have found themselves back to their teenage and young adult years. “Call of Duty – Black Ops 2”9 was re-released on PlayStation 4 and 5 on July 9, 2026 and many adults have returned to the game excited to be thrust back into the same toxic matchmaking lobbies of people screaming at one another and the zombies mode that popularized the game.

“Halo” returned with their remake of “Halo – Campaign Evolved”, developed by Halo Studios, released on July, 28 2026. The original release was launched on November 15, 2001. This game was the gold standard for multiplayer first-person shooter.

It changed the landscape of gaming by introducing a fun multiplayer, mind-blowing graphics, and a campaign that left an emotional impact on the players. It created the most memorable and well-known sequences for gamers and non-gamers alike, where many who haven’t played the game are still familiar with Master Chief, the Flood, or the immortalized theme song.

Many players recalled being at low emotional points in their lives and found solace and joy after spending hours on their favorite games. It improved their mental states, and it unconsciously created an emotional footprint in their memories. So, when their nostalgia triggered those fond memories, they were compelled to return to the happy feelings they remembered from their childhood. The human brain worked to store that emotional information.

The psychology behind the return of these franchises comes from companies triggering the player’s sense of nostalgia. Doing so will stimulate fond memories of their past stemming from their enjoyment of the game. That information is used to remind the person of any personal connotations that stemmed from a specific memory. With that association, humans instinctively gravitate towards the positive memories their brain retains from an experience.

Nostalgia works in tandem with the brain, triggering positive memories within the player and increasing the likelihood that they will return to the memory that left such an impactful positive impression from long ago.
