What Lloyd Frontera Teaches Us About Leadership In ‘The Greatest Estate Developer’ (2021)

As the curtains fall on The Greatest Estate Developer1 (BK_Moon, 2021) and its 210th manhwa chapter, Lloyd Frontera’s extraordinary journey has finally come to a quiet, heart-warming end. However, the path to achieving a peaceful life with his found-family wasn’t the one that Lloyd had originally intended to walk.

His arrival in the world of “Knight of Blood and Iron” marked the beginning of his pursuit of riches, riddled with obstacles all along the way. From ending deep-rooted rivalries between kingdoms, beating angels and demons into submission, and even sending the King of Hell flying in defeat, Lloyd turned the world upside down.

But defeating the King of Hell cost Lloyd dearly, and he was sent back into his original body in South Korea. Without his friends, who defied the rules of the world alongside him throughout his journey, he would’ve remained unrescued in that place that had crushed his spirit.

Before anyone knew it, Lloyd Frontera, once known as the hooligan of the Frontera estate, had become a leader that the world was willing to do anything to get back.

What began as a simple journey to achieve a wealth-filled life became Lloyd Frontera’s story, evolving into a masterclass of leadership, legacy-building, and unlikely heroism.

As The Greatest Estate Developer closes its final chapter, one question remains: how did he change the very world that once despised him? To understand his lasting resonance, one must look beyond the surface of his projects and accolades and examine how he became the hero he is.

The Reluctant Schemer — Lloyd’s Early Motivations

Before he was Lloyd Frontera, a depraved nobleman of the “Knight of Blood and Iron” fantasy novel, he was Suho Kim — a poor, overworked, South Korean civil engineering student.

Despite suddenly finding himself transported into the body of the side character, Lloyd Frontera, from the fantasy world of his favorite novel, he quickly overcomes his initial shock.

While Lloyd remembers the novel’s major plot points, he most notably recalls the imminent doom of his newfound family, who are supposed to lose everything to conmen at the beginning of “Knight of Blood and Iron.”

While he may seek to exploit his knowledge of the story and the noble birth that comes with taking over Lloyd Frontera’s body — and earn the fortunes he had been deprived of in South Korea — he’s weighed down by personal memories and the precarious predicament of the Frontera family.

Haunted By Mediocrity

In the manhwa’s first chapter, Lloyd thinks that if he clears his family’s debt, he can live his life in peace as the heir to their barony.2 Having been an exploited worker in his past life, he saw stepping into a position of privilege as a form of reparation.

He was well-acquainted with the feeling of being crushed by superiors who toxically sought to exploit him, trapped in a pit of debt, and having his spirits and ambitions crushed by a merciless society. Remembering these suffocating feelings motivates Lloyd to never experience such pain again and to not waste the fresh start that he was given.

But when Lloyd’s confronted by the debt collectors hounding his new parents, he can’t help but remember his own parents as Suho Kim — crushed by the very same ills that plague the Frontera Family now. He remembers how his own parents shielded him from their financial precarity, so that he could focus on school and achieve a better future than their own.

While the Fronteras used to be mere side characters in his favorite novel, Lloyd refuses to let the same mistakes from his old life repeat themselves in his new one. He joins the Fronteras’ fight, and while he may tell himself that it’s all for the sake of the comfortable future that he desires, deep down, he does so because he knows that they, too, deserve better.

Unorthodox Leadership — Earning Loyalty Through Charm & Coercion

Lloyd Frontera’s journey as the greatest estate developer began with the ondol. The idea of bringing the ondol, a traditional Korean heated floor, into the world of “Knight of Blood and Iron” occurred by happenstance after hearing that his citizens’ health was often at risk from seasonal colds.

While ondols were largely overlooked as something common in Korea, they were an inconceivable luxury capable of improving the lives and health of Frontera citizens. Realizing this, Lloyd seized the opportunity and chose to sell ondols to kick-start his business.

However, with the Frontera estate’s empty coffers, limited manpower, and the overall distrust that Lloyd faced from his potential customer base, constructing something as seemingly simple as a heated floor was a large undertaking. To get the ball rolling, Lloyd was forced to leverage fear over his citizens to earn his first ondol contract.

Even though Lloyd “earned” his first contract, he needed help to actually follow through with it. Lloyd’s attempt to wrangle labor assistance was met with resistance.

When he tried to enlist the aid of his territory’s soldiers, he had to earn their respect by dueling their corrupted commander — one of The Greatest Estate Developer’s first minor antagonists, working with the conmen.

He puts his well-being on the line and forces himself to learn how to fight in what limited time he has before the duel. His eventual victory not only shocks the estate but also serves as the key that finally earns him the acknowledgement he needed.

Upon the first ondols successfully beginning to be churned out, and with his recent display of courage and ability, little by little, the people of Frontera slowly begin to think that they may have been wrong about Lloyd.

Blueprints Of Bravado

Lloyd is a faithful adherent to the carrot-and-stick approach, tactfully blending strong-arm tactics and rewards. Beating the Frontera estate’s corrupted commander into submission was but a drop in the bucket.

Lloyd often traps friends and foes alike into signing contracts, ensnaring them in his schemes. He also uses public deeds as a means to earn loyalty, secure funding, and even manipulate others to better his situation.

While Lloyd may seem to take advantage of others for his own profit, he does so by improving their lives in the process.

As The Greatest Estate Developer’s early chapters establish, he holds himself to a moral compass dictated by his and his family’s troubled upbringing in South Korea. While Lloyd may not see the good within himself, his people do.

Building Legacy — How Deeds Define The Man

All roads lead to Frontera. One of Lloyd’s first large-scale construction projects was the development of a road that connected the small, countryside barony to the kingdom at large. He likewise expands the wealth of his territory by transforming the Maritz Wetlands and turning it into farmland, while crippling his northern rivals in the process.

In an effort to expand his entrepreneurial enterprises, Lloyd elevates Frontera into a relevant player on the world stage, while carrying his people upwards as well.

Deeds Over Declarations

His name spreads across the land along with his exploits, but as Queen Alicia tells Lloyd during their first meeting,

“I don’t judge a man merely based on another’s recommendation.”

In the same way Lloyd redeems himself to the citizens of the Frontera estate, he also proves himself elsewhere across the world. Even so, that isn’t enough to capture the essence of Lloyd. For it isn’t necessarily Lloyd’s goals that he’s remembered for, but rather, the net result of those goals.

For instance, the orcs of the Sand and Steel Tribe don’t remember their use as cheap labor for the Frontera coal mine; they relish the stable food supply that Lloyd creates as payment to sustain their fitness-based culture.

The Sultan of the Asfahan Kingdom doesn’t remember how Lloyd originally sought to outwit and blackmail him for a construction contract; he does remember the watering hole that ended the drought-induced rebellion before it could begin.

In every parcel of land he touched, what remained wasn’t the deal struck, but the difference made.

A Schemer With A Soul

Lloyd’s legacy is one of transformation. He doesn’t merely leave behind roads, modern architectural marvels, and buildings — he leaves behind changed lives and altered fates. To the outside world, he is a prosperous and ambitious nobleman, an eccentric engineer, and a political powerhouse.

But to those who lived through his schemes, he’s remembered as a savior. Lloyd Frontera’s deeds endure because he offers heartfelt, tangible reforms, rather than empty, symbolic gestures. His legacy isn’t merely noted for the histories or spread like a passing folktale; it’s etched into the very lives he made better.

Why Lloyd Frontera Resonates With Readers

Lloyd Frontera is an unconventional hero, straying from the typical smoldering, sword-wielding, strongman often seen in fantasy narratives. In fact, Lloyd is seen as someone who is rather ugly, fights with a shovel — of all things — and is largely believed to be weak and morally compromised.3

But in the same way that the people of “Knight of Iron and Blood” can see the good in Lloyd, the audience can too.

The audience even sees what Javier, or any of Lloyd’s other close companions, cannot. They know the truth of his identity, the scars he carries from South Korea, and most importantly, the genuineness in his soul. Lloyd isn’t transcendent; he’s a human given a second chance at life.

The Heart Beneath The Hustle

Many readers can sympathize with Lloyd’s desire to be rewarded for his labor, such as how a worker would expect a check after a hard day’s work. Likewise, the value that Lloyd places on his close relationships, such as those shared with the Frontera family, Javier, Queen Alicia, and many others, is a familial tether that not only grounds him but also reveals a vulnerability many readers harbor within themselves.

But the reason Lloyd Frontera resonates with readers goes beyond relatability — it lies in the net result of his deeds.

Upon reaching the climax of his battle with the King of Hell, the system reveals that Lloyd had changed the fates of 73,409,579 lives. Each and every one of those people owes Lloyd Frontera the world, and they pay him back by joining him in battle against the King of Hell himself.

The Most Meritorious Citizen

Lloyd is a hero in his own self-serving way. He’s outrageous, strong when and where it matters, and capable of making light of a moment of crisis. By the logic of The Greatest Estate Developer, there’s no disputing that Suho Kim taking over the original body of Lloyd Frontera was a net positive for the world.

Without him, they would’ve been resigned to the doom that awaited them. He’s a talent that kings and queens, angels and devils, and anyone with a shred of ambition want at their side.

Breaking Molds To Build An Empire — A Leader Like No Other

Lloyd Frontera is a one-of-a-kind leader so revered that his people are willing to cross the boundary between worlds to get back. His story isn’t defined by the comforts he pursued or the monuments he built, but rather, the lives he uplifted in doing so.

Lloyd’s road to becoming the greatest estate developer was riddled with obstacles, evil-doers, and deities. He’s a man who inspires belief, and a man with the courage to take on whatever risk necessary to achieve his goal. Lloyd Frontera rewrote the rules of the world, and in doing so, he showed that even seemingly ordinary people are capable of doing the impossible, too.
