Luigi’s Mansion 3: A Nostalgic Ghost Hunt At The Last Resort Hotel

If you’re a long-time Nintendo fan then you might have owned the Gamecube. Luigi’s Mansion (2001) developed by Nintendo and Grezzo was a launch title for the console and became a beloved classic. The game follows Luigi Mario of the Mario brothers who receives news that he won a mansion in a contest he did not enter. Luigi and his brother, Mario, agree to meet up there, but when Luigi arrives Mario is nowhere to be found. Luigi enters the mansion, but is shortly after attacked by a ghost. Luckily scientist, Professor E. Gadd, comes to Luigi’s rescue. Together Luigi and Professor E. Gadd team up to hunt down ghosts and find Mario with the use of the Poltergust 3000 vacuum cleaner. Following Luigi’s Mansion (2001), there are now two sequels. The most recent is Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019), developed by Next Level Games and produced by Nintendo.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019) follows a similar premise to the original plot. The story follows Luigi and Professor E. Gadd working together to capture ghosts to save Mario and friends. This sequel contains familiar game play, like ghost hunting and room exploration from the original game. Additionally, there are new features such as co-op, expanded multiplayer, and DLC content.

Your Brother Is On Another Floor

In the Mario universe, Mario typically has one goal. He fights to rescue Princess Peach and save the Mushroom Kingdom. The same is true for Luigi. Just like in the first games, Luigi takes on the task to save Mario and friends. In this game, Luigi and friends receive an invitation to the Last Resort Hotel for a vacation. After arriving, Luigi wakes up in the night to find the hotel empty. He soon finds out that the hotel owner lured the group there.

The mastermind, King Boo, planned the invitation to trap them and settle the score once and for all. Luckily Luigi safely flees from his encounter with King Boo. Soon after, he reunites with Professor E. Gadd. The professor explains that Luigi should collect the missing elevator buttons to find his brother and friends on the upper levels. The narrative lacks complexity, but is compelling enough for players to continue playing through.

Gooigi Reaches New Heights In Luigi’s Mansion 3

After escaping King Boo, Luigi finds the new Poltergust model G-00. Once Luigi partners up with Professor E. Gadd, he gets two new gadgets. The professor gives Luigi the Virtual Boo, which is a device that allows communication between the two of them. The other gadget is Gooigi, a doppelganger of Luigi made of lime-green goo. During Luigi’s ghost adventures, he uses his Poltergust to advance through the floors of the hotel. The Poltergust assists Luigi by creating a burst to breakaway from enemies, blowing air to push objects, sucking air to collect objects, using the dark light to reveal hidden secrets, using the strobulb to stun, and summoning Gooigi.

The hotel has seventeen floors with each floor having a different theme. There are a variety of ghosts to defeat as players advance through the levels. Much like the first game, players are free to explore the levels to find hidden treasures and secrets. The most notable game play feature is summoning Gooigi. A single or local second player can control him and is essential in progressing. With Gooigi’s aid, Luigi is able to reach certain areas that he normally cannot. Gooigi can pass through bars, spikes and grates, but will melt if he touches water and disintegrate if he touches fire.

Share Scares With Luigi At The ScreamPark

One of the most entertaining aspects of modern video games is the ability to play online with others. If players need a break from single player mode, the game offers multiplayer at the Scarescraper and ScreamPark. Scarescraper mode supports up to eight players and four consoles online. The objective is to climb the floors and complete the mission within the time limit. Some missions will require ghost hunting or collecting cash. This mode does not require much teamwork, but there are traps that cannot be escaped without help.

At the ScreamPark there are three mini games that up to eight players can play on the same console. It is team Luigi versus team Gooigi. Teams must compete to see who can get the most points before time runs out.

Coin Floating

In this mini game battle players are in a swimming pool floating on inner tubes. Using the Poltergust to steer, players must collect coins. The team with the most coins wins, but players must beware of mines dropping into the pool. Players lose all coins if they hit the mines.

Ghost Hunt

This mini-game battle takes place at a spooky graveyard. Much like in story mode, players must defeat the ghosts that appear. Defeating ghosts will award the team points. Though, some ghosts are worth more points than others.

Cannon Barrage

The third mini game battle takes place in a medieval setting. Players must work together to collect cannon balls, load the cannon and hit the moving targets. To gain an advantage, players can also steal cannon balls from the other team.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 Is A Haunting To Remember

Overall Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019) is visually alluring and fun to play. Though the narrative mirrors previous Luigi’s Mansion games, the newly added features enhance the gameplay. Likewise, each level’s unique themes allow for fun exploration. As a result, backtracking through each level searching for hidden secrets is never boring. Also, the ability to complete the story in co-op with Gooigi makes for a unique gaming experience. If players grow tiresome of the single-player mode, the multiplayer games are great for local or online play. Each added detail to this Luigi’s Mansion sequel makes it one of the top Nintendo Switch games to play.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019) was released October 31, 2019 and is available online through Nintendo’s eShop or in-store at Gamestop, Best Buy or Target. Additionally, there was a DLC pack available for purchase on April 30, 2020. The first pack expands the number of mini game battles, costumes to wear, themed levels and ghosts.
