“Monster Hunter” (2004-) — How A Niche Franchise Became A Global Phenomenon

“Monster Hunter’s” recent success came as a surprise to many; the franchise had long struggled to break into the Western and global markets. This concern was alleviated by the franchise’s best-selling game, “Monster Hunter World,” upon its release in 2018. From niche to gaming staple, “Monster Hunter World” introduced global audiences to Japan’s tried-and-true Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG).

Developed and published by Capcom, “Monster Hunter World” ran on its proprietary MT Framework engine, like the previous installment. Capcom would later move the franchise to their RE Engine1, also known as the Reach for the Moon Engine, not “Resident Evil” like many would think, with the release of “Monster Hunter Rise” in 2021 and onward. But before Capcom had their best-selling game, “Monster Hunter” was a game with an uncertain future.

Through The Generations

Capcom never strayed from what they created; since its debut in 2004, the franchise has continued to evolve, adding new mechanics, weapons, monsters, and gameplay features through multiple generations. But the core concept never changed: hunt monsters and explore the environments. Each generation has its own charm that the dedicated player base favors, and “Monster Hunter” (2004) marked the beginning of the first generation.

First Generation

But before the success of “Monster Hunter World,” the franchise would have multiple installments into the series. The franchise’s first game “Monster Hunter” takes the player back to The Old World.2 The game was released on PlayStation 2 in 2004 and would have an expansion in 2005 with “Monster Hunter G.” Players awoke in Kokoto Village, located northwest of The Old World.

They can speak to the village chief to receive money and purchase their first piece of gear. Hunters would now be tasked with their first mission: go get two raw meats and be sent outside the village. The first couple of quests would be similar — finding items, combining items, and even cooking the items that would be found. Afterward, hunters would face their first urgent quest: slay three Velociprey (velociraptor-like monsters3). As hunters proceeded with the game, the monsters would become bigger and more ferocious.

It starts slow, teaching players the value of patience. “Monster Hunter” isn’t a game designed to be conquered at a breakneck pace — it is deliberately slow in every aspect, from gathering materials and climbing to navigating the map and taking down monsters.

“Monster Hunter” introduced the core mechanics that would define the rest of the franchise, establishing its signature gameplay loop. Players would take the role of the hunter and accept tasks such as tracking, hunting, slaying, capturing the large monster, or even stealing and delivering eggs. This would all be done in a time limit that would be imposed by the village. Hunters would be able to carve out slain monsters to obtain different parts such as the tail, wings, scales, meat, and all this would be to build gear.

Each game in the franchise introduced unique weapons and armor for hunters. The original lineup featured the Greatsword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Lance, Hammer, Light Bowgun, and Heavy Bowgun. As hunters gathered materials from their hunts, they could craft and upgrade their gear, enhancing their arsenal over time.

The franchise’s second installment, “Monster Hunter Freedom,” made its way to handheld consoles. Released on the PlayStation Portable (PSP)4 in 2005 for Japan and 2006 for the rest of the world, it was based on “Monster Hunter G.” While it introduced more monsters, the weapon count remained the same. This marked the end of the franchise’s first generation.

Second Generation

For the next two years, Capcom would release “Freedom 2” in 2007 and the third installment, “Freedom Unite” in 2008 for the PSP. ”Monster Hunter Freedom Unite”5 marked the franchise’s mainstream breakthrough.

The game would sell nearly four million copies6 worldwide. This generation introduced new weapons, including the Long Sword, Gunlance, Hunting Horn, and Bow, while refining the rough gameplay of the previous generation and adding new monsters.

Third Generation

After “Freedom Unite,” the start of the third generation would begin in 2009 with the release of “Monster Hunter 3 (Tri)” in Japan. Tri would start the generation returning to home consoles on the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo’s own portable console, the Nintendo 3DS. This was the first “Monster Hunter” game not released on a PlayStation console due to high development cost.7

This generation would introduce underwater combat8, the Switch Axe as the new weapon, and a more robust and dynamic ecosystem. In 2011, “Monster Hunter Tri” received an expansion, “Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate,”9 marking the end of the third generation. Between these two games, “Monster Hunter Portable 3rd” was released exclusively in Japan in 2010, becoming the franchise’s best-selling title until 2018.10

Fourth Generation

From 2013 to 2015, Capcom would release fan favorites “Monster Hunter 4” and “Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.” Being released on the Nintendo 3DS, this game continues the trend of not releasing on PlayStation. It was a significant leap in gameplay and accessibility, introducing the Charge Blade and Insect Glaive as new weapons, as well as vertical combat, mounting mechanics, and a more narrative-driven experience.

From 2015-2018, “Monster Hunter Generations” and “Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate” would be released. It was a celebration of the series’ legacy, bringing back monsters, locations, and characters from previous games — so much so that some claimed it had too much content. “Four Ultimate” would be the first “Monster Hunter” game to be released exclusively on Nintendo’s flagship home and portable console: the Switch.

These two releases would become the second and third best-selling games, behind “Portable 3rd.”

The Breakthrough: “Monster Hunter World” (2018)

Despite the success of “Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate,” the franchise had hit a roadblock — none of the games had surpassed five million copies sold. So how would Capcom overcome this hurdle?

Rather than completely reinventing the series, they chose to refine the formula. The introduction of “Monster Hunter World” changed the trajectory of the franchise, selling an astonishing 28 million copies11 and becoming both the best-selling game in the series and the highest-selling title in Capcom’s history.

Announced at E3 2017,12 “World” was a game that looked all too familiar to many fans and a game that would grab attention to those who never heard of the game. The next year, “World” would be released on PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One in January and on Windows computer in August of the same year.

While known for its steep learning curve, “Monster Hunter World” streamlined its gameplay. Players no longer needed to spend dozens of hours learning a single weapon. Crafting and gathering was revamped to accommodate new players. Tracking monsters was made easier as hunters now had scoutflies to guide them to the monster’s location.

Most importantly, the game introduced a seamless open-world environment. Gone were the zones separated by loading screens, making for a more immersive experience. It was now approachable to new players, and what was once a time-consuming and difficult game was now made with the mindset to have players waiting less and into the action more.

Gaining knowledge from previous installments, Capcom was able to gather bits and pieces to make a game that satisfied old fans but also welcomed new players.

The Story

While the stories of previous games were largely forgettable, “Monster Hunter World” revamped its narrative. Though not award-winning, the story provided an engaging experience, guiding hunters through the New World — a land separated from The Old World by sea.13

In this New World, the hunting guild establishes a settlement dedicated to researching and studying Elder Dragons — creatures present since the first game but now serving as the central focus of the story rather than just obstacles for players. The game also featured a more cinematic presentation, complete with localized voice acting and subtitles in multiple languages. Capcom was thinking beyond Japan.

Graphical Performance

Along with the improved story came enhanced graphics — “Monster Hunter World” was the first mainline game in the franchise developed for modern consoles. The PS4, Xbox One, and Windows PCs provided developers with more powerful hardware to work with. Gone were the limitations of mobile chips from portable consoles — “Monster Hunter World” ran on a robust AMD 8-core processor at 1080p and 30 FPS.

Although not the most impressive specs, “World” was able to push graphical fidelity that was never seen before in the franchise. Capcom brought stunning, high-definition visuals, never-before-seen monster design details, and a living, breathing ecosystem where animals and monsters interacted with their environment.

Collaboration

With its compelling gameplay and visuals, Capcom eagerly collaborated with other franchises. Fans could take on event quests to unlock custom gear from “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” “Final Fantasy XIV,” “Mega Man,” “Street Fighter,” and more, drawing in players from across the gaming community.

Multiplayer

Just like previous “Monster Hunter” games, online multiplayer allowed up to four players to team up on quests, with lobbies supporting up to sixteen players. Capcom continued to support the game with free updates, introducing event quests and new monsters at no additional cost.

Online Presence

The success of “Monster Hunter World” was driven not just by Capcom’s years of marketing and free updates, but also by its impact on streaming platforms. On its release, World peaked at 170,000 viewers14 on Twitch, numbers previous “Monster Hunter” games have never seen before. With popular online streamers such as moistcr1tikal, xQc and Asmongold playing hours and exposing thousands to the game, the franchise was able to grow legs to run on.

Through a strange turn of events, “World” has outlived the latest “MH” in the franchise. Released in 2021, “Monster Hunter Rise” peaked at 130,000 viewers on Twitch and has struggled to obtain more than 10,000 viewers this past year, while “World” has had a resurgence of its own peaking at 37,000 viewers in January alone.

Game Awards

In 2018, “Monster Hunter World” was nominated in three categories at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year, where it lost to “God of War.” It was also nominated for Best Role-Playing Game and Best Multiplayer Game, ultimately winning the award for Best Role-Playing Game.15

Capcom had found a crack in the wall to squeeze the franchise into the mainstream, and in 2019, they would release “Monster Hunter World: Iceborne,” an expansion that would serve as a hammer to break the wall down.

“Iceborne” Expansion

The release of “Iceborne” was an instant success, selling 14 million copies.16 It introduced a new icy region, the Hoarfrost Reach, along with The Guiding Lands, new monsters, new gear, and the long-awaited Master Rank, all wrapped in an expanded story. “Iceborne” received widespread praise for the sheer amount of content it added with a single purchase, along with Capcom’s commitment to free updates down the road.

Modding Community

With everything set in stone, the PC community embraced one of its favorite pastimes — modding. A vast number of mods were created, keeping the game alive long after official updates had ended.

Players could add custom armor and weapons, modify character appearances, and introduce new effects. With thousands of mods available, downloading and installing them became a seamless process, leading to an impressive 81.6 million downloads on Nexus Mods17.

The Legacy

“Monster Hunter World” left an unparalleled mark on the franchise. Capcom built upon lessons from previous installments, refining key aspects of the game by introducing seamless multiplayer, streamlined combat, and expansive environments — broadening its appeal to a global audience. With “World’s” legacy firmly established, the franchise took a step forward with the release of “Monster Hunter Rise” in 2021 and will continue its evolution with “Monster Hunter Wilds” in 2025.

The Future

Capcom has expanded the franchise’s popularity beyond Japan, bringing “Monster Hunter” to a global audience. The game’s ever-evolving quality-of-life improvements set a new standard for the series, paving the way for “Monster Hunter Rise” and its expansion, “Sunbreak.” Together, they went on to sell over twenty million copies, further cementing the franchise’s success.

With “Monster Hunter Wilds” launching on February 28, the game is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC. It promises graphical enhancements, a larger and more vertical map, free updates, new monsters, and expanded weapon skills, further evolving the franchise’s formula.

As “Monster Hunter Wilds” surpasses “Monster Hunter World” on Twitch, hitting 408,000 viewers18 on release day. Accumulating 1.384 million players on Steam,19 that’s four times more than World’s [334,000] peak, and becoming Capcom’s first game to surpass a million simultaneous Steam players — all done in the first 24 hours of release. Even beating out gaming cultural phenomenons like “Elden Ring,” “Marvel Rivals,” “Cyberpunk 2077,” “Dota 2,” and “Lost Ark”20 — showcasing a bright future for Japan’s tried and true ARPG.

”World” brought the franchise to the forefront — even in the third quarter of 2024 (October–December), it sold a million copies, according to IGN Japan.21 What was once a niche, tight-knit community has now expanded worldwide and continues to grow.
